South Leeds Education

The area has three ‘inner city' high schools, South Leeds High School, Cockburn College of Community Arts and Rodillian (South Leeds Performing Arts College) that face particular challenges in engaging young people in learning. All three schools have attainment levels below both the Leeds and national averages for achievement.

South Leeds High School is located in a state of the art education facility next to the John Charles Sports Centre, funded through a Private Finance Initiative (PFI). The school is currently under "special measures" as a result of a negative assessment report by OFSTED.

Cockburn College is undergoing a major modernisation exercise and will soon be housed in an ultra-modern establishment. Over the last three years, the school has realised substantial improvements in educational achievement levels, thanks in part to private sector support to enhance attainment levels and aspirations. More support is required to raise standards towards national average achievement levels in education.

Rodillian School has had a comprehensive programme of recent improvements include the acquisition of specialist computer facilities, refurbishment of science laboratories, art rooms, technology area, Resource Centre and pastoral area.
